He remembered the stuttering pout that he gave when the words reached his ears. He had given his own name to the stranger but was left calling the individual “that handsome moon clan man” in his head when he replayed yesterday’s events through his head.
And what had happened last evening was quite the roller coaster of events too, from the casual flirt he initiated with to the many moments following where their proximity had grown too close. He didn’t expect the other to follow suit so strategically, drawing an embarrassed flush from him when their lips had almost graced each other. He remembered his startled wide eyes, a shock of green that couldn’t believe the beauty before him.
Thinking about it again only flustered himself more. Frustrated with his own emotions, Quinn let out a faint grunt of distress, shielding his eyes with his forearms and covering away any sight. With a sluggish lurch, he turned himself from his back over onto his stomach, earning an annoyed yowl from Julmunui who had been napping beside him. He paid her no attention however, too busy in his own thoughts to care about the heavy weight that crawled into a bundle on his lower back.
In simple words, he was falling in love, and he knew it. A naive infatuation that would most likely develop into a deeper affection if he really was to follow through on his promise. It was always the mischievous ones too, that got swooned by. His last partner, who was also his first, ended up in exile for a personality too aggressive and a mind plotting treason. Now, it was someone who his whole clan saw as an enemy, becoming a treasonous individual himself.
The moon child was too angelic, masked, unique, and it was just making him distracted all over the place. The hunter returned home empty handed too, deciding to bury the mutilated body instead of lugging it home, the grave being the faint mount of soil and wildflowers just a meter away from him. He wanted to give the corpse a chance to rest from whatever dark magic it had seen, the darker side of the stranger that Quinn conveniently kept forgetting about.
It was all just a giant mess, and the golden hunter huffed out a stressed sigh, blowing up dust and flakes of foliage around his folded arms. A part of him wanted to push the thought away for later, and he directed his attention elsewhere. The sun’s rays warming his hair and his back, Julmuni keeping him anchored down and radiating his own circle of heat. The occasional chirp of song birds and howl of primates, the buzzing of flying insects…
The white noise soon became a lullaby for the now unconscious boy, golden thoughts drifting off into a light nap. Although to an outsider, it might have looked like a dead body, face down and unmoving spare the faint rising and sinking of a breathing chest. It was quite an odd position for one to be comfortable in too, an archery kit looped through one arm with the signature staff of ivory tucked horizontally under the armpits.
The hard line of white especially should’ve prodded the sleeper uncomfortable, but someone had spent too much of the night gazing up at a pale moon, dreaming how such a glow reflected in a certain individual’s eyes. The warmth of noon was enough to make the sun child drowsy.
It was early, just brushing the tip of midday with the blinding eye of the sun circling like a vulture; center frame in the bright blue sky. Pouring through the thick overhang of jungle canopy were the filtered rays of light, a speckled pattern of luminescence splattering the tangle of ground in scraggly patches of sun. Warm and cold. Emery clung to the cool shade of the trees, the sheath of his blade a heavy reminder against his hip, and the black leather satchel bulging over the shoulder of his right arm a comforting weight. Exotic herbs to classifications only he knew the names of, they were merely tag-along from his previous task.
Herb-picking to restore stock, the sudden thought of a certain blond haired man had fluttered across his mind's eye; brief and faint like a firefly. A promise to meet this particularly handsome stranger from the previous night. The memory of viridian eyes had ruined his concentration, and instead of marching back to the Moon clan's domain to organize supplies, he simply opted to sink deeper into the jungle. Bringing his work with him, and hastening over to the area they had first met.
At least, it was what he assumed when the man had told him to meet him the next day.
His footsteps were muffled, quieted in the overgrowth as he crossed through sections of faint sunlight. Quicksilver eyes periodically scanning the horizon, intent on making out a figure of sun-touched hair from the sea of green. All was peaceful within the underbelly, the harking of fowl a piercing cry across the expanse, and there was no need to rush, but Emery could not still the anticipation blossoming within his chest.
The hunter had kept his promise, correct? With a personality as open and friendly as his, there was no doubt, and yet the mortician could not dissect the nagging bite of mistrust that withered behind his ribs. It was merely a bout of paranoia, nothing more. Stop it.
The stride of his legs guided him back to a familiar area of trampled foliage and lingering recollections. His sober gaze roaming, silver orbs finally snagged on a mound of dirt, an unnatural spill that had not resided there yesterday. With the knowledge of handling death, Emery could tell, with a quick glean, it had been recently made. A grave freshly dug, perhaps within the last half day or so, that bore on its smoothed surface a gathering of flowers; wild reds and oranges a rather quaint yet pretty sight to behold. And with events in mind, he was aware of what lay beneath the surface.
Eyes shifted to the side and away from the remains of his previous project, stopping to observe the creator of the rodent's grave resting a short distance away from his masterpiece.
The coral pink line of Emery's lips slid upwards into an endearing smirk, remaining plastered to his mouth even as he stepped closer to garner a better look at his newly found companion. He was asleep, arms folded and weaponry strewn about his person; long golden lashes brushing against the contours of well-rounded cheekbones. Strands of hair had fallen into his face, ruffled by the barely noticeable breeze. It was an odd pose to be resting in. The closer his steps dragged him, the more he noticed the ocelot curled against the lower back, and the sight of her arrested him in place.
She had attempted to claw into his throat during their initial encounter, and it was a memory he tried to forget in vain. The blood dripping down his neck, turning gory his silver-stained image. Emery regarded her with care, an old foe. Dropping his black satchel with a light thud to the ground, free of burden, the young male slunk towards the prone form lying within the overgrowth and stagnated. Pausing to fold his legs beneath him and rest on his knees; white robes spread about like an artificial wave of snow. Pooling to encompass the entire lower half.
A thin hand reached out, slender fingers curled to gently card through locks as gold as the sun. In the midday reflection, they burned just as bright. "Wake yourself, Quinn. It's no good if you sleep like the dead in the middle of the jungle." His voice, melodious and quiet, gently trickled from upturned lips. Matching the softness of his slow, rousing strokes. "If you don't, you'll never find out what my name is..."
Though a light tease, Emery meant the subtle threat, and he glanced over his shoulder at the speckled cat.
Translucent gaze lingering for only a heartbeat.
His attention was more focused on getting the other to rise, anyway.
Ears were perked up straight, still turning towards any source of noise despite her slumbering appearance. The loud buzzing of cicadas and underlying frequencies of birds. The occasional rustle of leaves earned a flicker from the soft ears, but when the sounder not only persisted or neared, the cat drew her head up.
The round skull swiveled alert, keenly watching a distant being enlarge into sight behind her, a bright appearance that was familiar but not too friendly, not in her books.
She recognized the man as the one that attacked her soul bound friend, a hostile impression to the simple feline brain. There was no immediate reaction, however, for Julmunui did remember the commands that her person gave. After hiding herself away, she had kept an eye on the two, watching their interaction and waiting for another chance to strike.
None came, and she was under the assumption that the two would be fine together. The spotted tail sweeped once.
The creature was quite close now, collapsing down next to the body she laid on. Lime eyes carefully followed any kind of movement, especially the limb that touched his person’s head. The furry body twisted itself turning around to face the newcomer and stretched out a paw to swat at the petting hand.
Claws were not extended, but she made an effort to keep the stranger from bothering her napping companion.
The shifting weight on his back stirred his consciousness, and further movements kept his mind from slipping back into a slumber. Then he felt fingers through his hair, a comforting touch that he faintly nuzzled against, not awake enough yet to register the oddity of the gesture, who it was from and why.
The voice was the one to pierce through his senses, however, and the face had jerked upwards, appearing from underneath with the chin resting on folded forearms. It took awhile for him to recognize the sound, gentle and floating and different from what he remembered. It was the moon clanner from yesterday.
Upon realizing his arrival, Quinn immediately turned over to his side, sliding the feline of his back and gazing up at the towering figure. Sun rays were glowing from behind the silver locks, heaven’s lights presenting to him this handsome image.
A few more seconds passed before the groggy boy realized that he was staring and completely failed to process the words said to him. He propped himself up on an elbow, wanting to be somewhat presentable but hesitant to leave his fading bubble of sleep.
The paw reaching for his hand was disregarded, but his line of sight shifted to enclose the spotted wild cat in the silvery gaze; sweeping over the lithe form curled protectively on top of her master. She meant no harm with the gesture that had simply been, in his thoughts, advisory. A mere warning. And though the meaning of her reaction was not lost, it was too late.
Quick and skittish, the lord of the Sun awoke, leaving Emery's light orbs snapping to attention. Descending to fixate on the golden locks of hair shifting to the side, and the bright jade eyes stuttering upwards. The ghost of a smile hung at the edge of pale lips, threatening to grow wider at the sight of the young man stumbling to draw themselves out of their saccharine reverie. Highly amusing.
The hand that had been stroking through soft hair retracted, regaining a place in its owner's lap. A dominant silence curtained the dusty moment, surrendering the mortician to a temporary muteness. His jaw refused to work, shape the air necessary for tangible words, until the male of the Sun shattered the blanket of quietness with a hasty question. Ah. It seemed he would have to parrot back his previous context.
"I said 'wake yourself, Quinn, as it is no good to sleep like the dead in the middle of the jungle.'" Emery murmured into the warm air, his voice, a hybrid of both male and female qualities, breaking the in-between chords of distant bird song. "And then I went as far as to whisper my name in your ear." The soft implicit purr dropped off into oblivion, replaced by the sharp smirk curling the corners of his mouth into a mischievous grin. Half of it was untruthful, of course. His name had not crossed his lips once in the vernacular, and though it edged on the tip of his tongue - a reward so early on in their meeting - he dare not break his small lie.
There would be other opportunities, especially if he was feeling benevolent.
"But, if I may ask a question myself, what made you think it was a pleasant idea to nap here? Even inhuming my previous experiment?" It was of genuine interest he spoke, not to just steer the conversation. Silver eyes taking their time to trace slowly over the handsome man's angular visage; tracking the sloped cheekbones and the gentle edge of his jaw, searching for some kind of emotion he could latch onto. Emery prompted his inquiry, and leaned back to center weight on the legs he had folded beneath him. Back ramrod straight, and wrists diligently crossed in his lap.
Quicksilver spotlights imploring, Emery settled patiently for an answer.
From the other's response, he would devise courses of action to either lead him astray, or towards the namesake that was yet to be exchanged. Be if he so desperately desired knowing what to call him, a game for his good Sun lord could present entertaining results.
Hands rubbing at caked eyes and fingers carding away stray bangs, Quinn did feel like a groggy mess sleeping on the jungle floor. And air of unconsciousness lingered around him but was shattered when ears heard the next words. Emerald snapped back up at the sitting figure, wide in startelement before turning pleading.
“Eh?! Can you whisper it to me again?”
A smile was resting on the thin lips with more of a mischievous taste than a genuine one. The guy had already skipped out on telling him his name yesterday, it would be no surprise if it was held from him even further.
He pouted as he slowly rose from the ground, arms propping his torso up and legs shifting themselves into a crossed sit. Positioned parallel to the angel and brushing off stray dust and leaves on his chest, Quinn resumed a more casual posture in comparison to the other. A slouched back with elbows propped on the knee set lower than the tall and straightened back of the moon clanner.
A palm cradled the drowsy head, still not yet fully active from the nap but gratefully taking in the silvery appearance.
He contemplated the question asked at him, slowly recalling what events were in play before he passed out. As memories trickled in, a tint of red followed suit in his cheeks, and his eyes were widening too. Quinn suddenly jerked upright and turned his face to the side, arms straightened and nervously grabbing his ankles.
“I w-was just tired, that's all…”
From not sleeping at night thinking of you.
“The Sun made it warm and comfortable…” I needed to get you out of my thoughts.
“And the capybara went through a lot of trouble, so I just thought that I'd let it rest in peace…”
The sudden desperation in jade eyes was apparent, and Emery could not stop the light chuckle that built in the back of his throat. Adapted off the other male's pleading expression, it bounced quietly in his chest; a sound smothered behind a pale hand still managing to make itself known to the world. "I'll whisper it to you some other time. Soon." He concluded gently, drawing up the same hand to pick at a stray leaf still bound between golden locks.
It fluttered to the ground helplessly, melding in to the leaf mold and trampled undergrowth. Silvers eyes moved to glance at Quinn, observing with care as the other regained a seated posture and attempted to rouse themselves from the heavy grip of slumber. Somewhat successfully. Emery's gaze tracked the slouch in his posture, but he barely had enough time to catalog the details to memory before his concentration was interrupted. The sudden twist jammed the focus of his stare and he chanced a glimpse of the man's face for questions. A glint of red. Lightly dusted across the cheeks where the blood threatened to pool beneath the skin.
Apprehension?
His stance had altered into something stiff, defensive, and Emery listened to the string of broken answers. A light trickle echoing in his ears. Unsure of the sudden bout of anxiety that had possessed the lord of the Sun, he addressed with subtle caution.
"Reasonable and generous. Still, not quite the best thought to leave yourself vulnerable, ocelot or not." The young man continued, lazily swatting at a green beetle that attempted to fly too close to his right ear. "It does not really matter now. But what does, however, is the fact you still don't have what you came for - a title to call me. You want to know?" Emery's voice dropped to a quiet flow, inhabiting the space between them with a sincere inquiry. "I'll confess, but you should understand I do not do anything for free."
It was an interesting rule he had conscripted for himself a couple years back. Doing things in exchange for nothing did not always sit well with the necromancer - especially when it wasted away the time he marked for practice - and he started a guideline. Pay with something valuable, and his service would be done. Monetary value; possessions; secrets. They could bargain his favor, but the more it caught his eye or attention, the more work he'd perform in the exchange. Offer him an apple, then the preservation would be halfhearted. Present him with a rumor, and the family would see their loved one beautifully restored or ceremonially burned over a pyre with his blessings screaming over the roaring flames.
And Quinn would be no different. Even with his handsome countenance.
"It can be anything." Emery began, steepling his slender fingers together and resting them under his chin. The white of his visage reflective like snow in the midday sun. "An item, a secret, something worth basic monetary value. Anything will bribe me for my name, but my question to you is this." His quicksilver eyes softened, revealing a rather inquisitive glint trapped in the colorless orbs. Mirroring the slight incline of his head towards the Sun lord.
Sheaves of wintry locks spilled like water into the beauty's face.
His face felt hot, muscles fidgety. Was it noticable? The thumping of his heart in his ears thankfully receded a bit when the other had dismissed the stuttered response, and Quinn allowed himself to look back at his company. The topic, however, only returned to taunting him more about the unknown name.
The price was raised, and noises of gibberish protested at the inflation. He had nothing to give, or nothing he was willing to give materialistically. His staff was to never leave his side, and despite Gossamer being a casual replacement for his recurve bow, weaponry didn’t come cheap. There was nothing else on him except a few coins and his clothes, and there wasn’t much back in his room either.
A secret? He didn’t have any other than his developing crush for the moon's offspring, and that confession wouldn’t be coming anytime soon.
But to be asked to put a value on the individual’s soul… The was no price for life, and even if there was, it would be a cost that could not be attainable. The healer may be able to give his own freely around, patching up the gaps and holes within someone, but the existence of someone was beyond his capabilities. Quinn was more than aware of this and feared for the day he would fail to save someone.
His poutiness had yet to leave, his own simple mind going in circles with all of the questions he was asked. First the kiss of death, now this?
There was a soft prodding at his back, the spotted predator wanting the sunny boy’s attention to herself and not the stranger.
“I already gave you my name… And since you haven’t given anything back to me-”
His words were disrupted by the cat leaping onto his shoulders.
”Does that mean that my identity doesn’t have any value?”
Hands reached up to pick the heavy beast away from his head, plopping the agile body into his folded lap with a concluding stroke to the furry ears.
“But I can’t just put a value on you… Life shouldn’t be handled so simply, and your worth is more than any monetary value. I’m not going to put a price over your head.”
The coral pink line of his lips folded together in a semblance of patience, cool and calculated. In front of him, stumbling over his thoughts, rested the Sun lord who portrayed a rather conflicted expression. Did his question really have that much affect? Emery slid his head to the side, an unsure gesture, grey of his eyes fixated on the man seated across the small expanse which separated them. He could visualize the gears turning behind the golden hair, the twisting web of thought running rampant through pressured synapses.
He left the other man alone to contemplate the questions left, and lifted his silvery head to the blue sky above. A smattering of clouds drifted sluggishly on their respected air currents, drawn on by a faint breeze Emery could barely sense. Humming of insects, too, carried under the pleasant warmth.
It was simple to figure why his new companion would have found it a drowsy place despite the dangers that lurked beneath the canopy.
The mortician, however, refused to gaze too long at the vibrant eye of light, and brought his gaze back down to earth. Grounded; halted by the viridian orbs catching his in a gridlock stare. The blond lord seemed to have finally reached a proper conclusion. And it came with a wave of words. Peaceful yet fractured, they mimicked his sunken posture, as if he had dwelt on an obscene source of dismay.
What tumbled out, Quinn’s quiet summary of thoughts, jabbed at the organ behind Emery’s ribs. Tearing away a sliver of the angel’s collected countenance. Something crumbled within the depths of quicksilver eyes, giving way to a glazed shadow of perturbation. The feeling crushed against his throat.
“No… no. Don’t speak of it that way. Your identity has enough value to be of worth to me…” His voice shuddered out thin and airy, and two pallid palms lifted in show of hasty submission. An action, he hoped, did not startle the wild cat curled within the Sun child’s lap. “Basking in someone else’s company is a gift I did not have the luxury of before…”
Emery’s lips stilled, muteness silencing him to focus on conducting his next approach. Personally, the young man did not think his life was worth more than a few long years of funeral preparations and bribes. In the underbelly of his village, no friendly faces greeted him, leaving him to adopt a detached profile meant to shield; doing business only when necessary. The hunter thought differently, and it stabbed deep into his chest – enough to reject the idea completely.
They had contrasting ways of seeing one another.
“…you speak fondly of me, Quinn. Honestly, I’ve never deserved such words, but if that is your opinion, so be it. Appreciation is not something I am familiar with, but…” The witch paused, shifting through the shambles of his brain. “I can at least appreciate your persistence. I willfully agreed to alter my way of thought, and you’re only trying your best to shatter this self-destructive cycle.” Emery’s voice slithered out quietly, echoing in the back of his mind as he moved his hands forward. Hesitantly reaching for the other’s shoulders. “Because you think of me as granting you no worth, I’ll give you a reward for all your value, and your determination.”
‘Your presence here is enough compensation.’
The young male craned his head forwards, propping himself up on his knees. Pads of his fingers feathery light, just drifting against the fabric cloaking the man’s clavicle. The silver tips of hair brushed against a cheekbone as Emery leaned in and poised himself just beside the left auricle, angle of his jaw tipped downwards to permit speech. His eyes were downcast, shuttering to a gentle close when a phantom sigh escaped his lungs.
“My name,” pale pink lips stroked tenderly against the shell of the hunter’s ear, eliciting a faded whisper, “is Emery.”
He noticed the faintest change in the angel’s expression which transferred over into the soft voice, now spoken with more tension. A bittersweet moment for it hurt him that he had somehow hurt the other with the words, but the following words made his heart flutter, as if he had just heard sacred secrets from the formerly cold disposition. He was connecting with the man, stringing together friendships, and only making his puppy love worse.
More insights were released about the moon clanner’s life, details that prompted the golden brows to frown at the despair.
“Are you not around people a lot? Well, I’m more than willing to spend time with you, although you probably already know that...”
Quinn was slowly seeing into the individual’s hidden nooks and crannies in life, keenly listening in on where certain judgement or habits came from. They must’ve thought of themselves quite pessimistically… a tendency that the sunny personality couldn’t understand. Some insecurity is helpful for a motivation to develop and perfect, but the child of the night was only bashing on themselves.
He could see progress though, his heart skipping a beat once again when appreciation was given to him. A dumbstruck smile was spread across his face, and the boy almost oblivious to his giddy spirits as he flashed innocent teeth at his crush. Hands picked up the two soft forepaws in his lap and clapped the pink bean pads together in celebration of finally reaching his goal.
The blissful moment immediately turned into fragile heat, a hand resting on his shoulder and the gentle face floating close to his once again. Quinn felt the tickle of spider silk on his cheeks, as delicate as the owner’s appearance, and grew still. The ball of fur squirmed in his lap but vambraced arms held the sensitive animal down. She was not to disturb this awaited moment.
A wisp of warm carrying gentle syllables into his ear, a name that he heard and immediately loved, but could not focus on. The feathery touch of lips on his skin left streaks of fire, a sensation that sent sparkling shivers down his spine and guilt to his heart. Desperately, Quinn forced his thoughts back from his fantasies, forced his mind to digest the title now given to him, and forced his tied tongue to form some kind of response.
“I-it’s a beautiful name! Emery… Why would you want to keep it to yourself for so long?”
Emery paused at the threshold of pulling away, head downcast as he registered the sensation of air – words – like alarms past his own ear. A stuttered response, forced from evident proximity. His thumbs kneaded gently beneath the hunter’s clavicle, and in time with the faint sigh spilling past his lips.
“Beautiful…? I suppose it is, though that is why I decided to keep my namesake hidden.” The witch murmured plainly, disconnecting himself from their shared closeness; drawing further away to pin quicksilver eyes onto the other’s viridian irises. The signature flustered grin. “A confession, if I may.” He began as he gently pushed himself off study shoulders, regaining the previous position of hands nestled in his lap. Legs folded beneath him, and asserting enough distance to permit him an easy view of the reactions he was expecting to witness.
Besides, the spotted cat had squirmed in disapproval, and Emery was merely giving her room.
“Growing up, I was frequently mistaken for a female; a girl’s name with a girl’s face. Some elders hoped I would grow out of it come maturity, but they were put down very quickly.” Emery’s lips pushed into a shadow of a smile. “That title, ah… Some people do not know a man can be called ‘Emery’, and I’ve been approached in the past by a few voracious men who managed to disregard the reputation I’m known for. Of course, they figured out what I was after failed attempts at courting me.
“But the merits outweigh the negatives, at least in certain regards, and though I’ve come to not mind my own feminine appearance, some do.” The mortician lazily shrugged a shoulder, collar of his white robes mirroring the sluggish motion. “That’s enough audacity to admit it.”
Emery’s lips came to a rest, and he leaned back on his hands. Shattering the professionalism of his posture to gaze up at what little cloud he could glean between the overhang of growth. There was not much more he could shed on the matter, or why he had even considered uttering such a private concern. Trust, perhaps, but not enough. The witch was not going to inform Quinn of the weird looks; the occasional disapproving glower. Comments that considered him nothing more than a worthless cross-dresser. They were for his thoughts only, and it was better to leave the other amused at his history than confrontational.
Hungering for more insight.
The temporary moment of silence was used to bring attention back onto the golden lord’s visage, carefully to observe what could possibly be rampaging through the tight coils of brain behind his skull. He wouldn’t know, and simply allowed the pregnant pause to consume him.
Merely waiting for a judgement that could bitterly condemn or pleasantly coincide.
It was a comment that drew his attention and turned the rosy face. The viridian gaze glanced curiously for some kind of expression, but only found a disciplined visage that drew back to a conversing distance. There were more words to come, and Quinn quietly listened, hands still fumbling with the rambunctious ocelot while eyes were kept trained on Emery.
He knew that the man was beautiful, he knew it too well, but it wasn't until a closer look and instructing words that illustrated how the appearance could be mistaken as feminine. Upon first glance by a narrow mind, wrong assumptions were likely. Quinn could feel himself almost relating, however, with one of his own youthly experiences.
Remembering his childhood that he could share, the sunny voice piped up with a smile.
“You're not alone though! I haven't exactly been mistaken as a woman before, but I remember some people commenting about my name when I was a littlun.
“They said that Quinn was a gal’s name, but the only other Quinn’s that I've met have all been guys. I'm sure that there are other males out there named Emery too, and you're the only one that I've met with that appellation, so it's only a man’s name for now!
“Besides…”
It's not your femininity that I'm attracted to.
He kept his tongue too loose, and one of these days, he would be guilty of exposing his own secret. Sealing his own lips for a few seconds, the sun clanner redirected different words into his mouth.
“I-if you don't like the name that you were given, I can always call you something else. A nickname! Although I don't have any ideas or suggestions in mind right now…”
The mess of limbs in his lap were getting fussy, his own hands starting to lose the battled as claws grazed the surface of his wrists. Tired of the furry heavy weight that kept distracting him from his crush, Quinn picked the wriggling body up and tossed it to the side.
“Shall we move onto something more exciting then?”
Emery’s attention was drawn to the cheery voice, the vibrant smile that absorbed the silver of his gaze. As the Sun lord spun his tale, an involuntary smirk faintly creased the corners of pale lips – an expression of mirth the mortician was comfortable with showing off. It was not as wide as the other’s, but it was more noticeable then before; a waxing emotion that slowly bloomed across his face.
There was reason to be amused.
“You, dear Quinn? With your handsome features, I would not have been able to guess.” He responded genuinely, a conversational tone overtaking his relaxed manner. It was an honest opinion, however. The slope of a somewhat squarer jaw and a boyish face, it could not be entirely misguided. “With that enlightenment, however, I would have to say we share something from our childhoods. Mistaken identity…” Emery trailed off, silencing himself to listen closely to the next slew of recollective comments. They were helpful in some way, but the drop in volume – the fractured end of the last sentence with nowhere else to go – resonated incorrectly in his ears. A dissonance of an unfinished phrase.
The hunter had purposefully altered the words, leading away from their previous topic so seamlessly Emery did not have much time to register the change. Going from identity to nickname, they were parallel in subject, but two completely different ideas. But there was simply no use chasing the edge of the trail. It would be a waste of energy to attempt to gouge out information that was, most likely, irrelevant now.
He let it slip free from his observant behavior, and focused on providing an appropriate response. Gears switching within his brain; unlocking his jaw to form tangible vernacular. “No, a nickname won’t be necessary. Despite the few drawbacks it has, I am rather fond of it. Makes it more entertaining to shoo away pesky suitors.” He dismissed adamantly, half-lidded eyes drifting downwards to make out the busy form of the spotted feline. Though she seemed to struggle against her master to no avail, the child of the Sun dispatched her as if she were dead weight without any problems.
Effectively leaving him open for his rather surprising inquiry.
“Exciting?” Emery echoed back quietly, drawing his silver orbs back to the man seated across from him. “I assume you have something in mind due to your asking.” His mouth curled slid into a slightly wider smile; fragile and unassuming. “May I know?”
His cheeks might as well have been permanently stained a rosy red when a comment on his appearance flowed out from perfected pastel lips. Or was it the sun’s rays that wouldn’t stop heating up his face? The tongue continued babbling on, the one thing it knew how to do whether there was a mind behind it or not.
If he could, Quinn would’ve wanted to call the man an angel undeservingly blessed to him, but there was no knowing how his fresh acquaintance would’ve reacted to that title. Thankfully, there was no need for substitute designations as Emery had turned the offer down, allowing the sunny boy opportunities to play the melodic word off his lips.
But a sliver if insecurity snuck into his heart. Pesky suitors, did the moon clanner think of him as one of those? The boy was aware of his insistent outgoingness and wondered if he was only being accompanied for show, led on. The simplest solution would be to ask for an answer, but if only relationships were that easy. Quinn didn’t know how long he would keeping his feelings to himself, but he assumed it would be a while with how scared he was of chasing away his supposed to be rival.
He was, however, more than welcome to share with Emery what exciting plans he had in mind for their first encounter. Although…
“Well, this kind of embarrassing since I don’t have an exact plan in mind… but there’s plenty to do within a large jungle like this! Basic exploration, children’s games, there’s a river nearby to play in if you’d like.
The fragile smile was a constant expression on Emery’s lips, plastered against the creases of his mouth as he sat silent. Bouncing the ideas the hunter had rattled off up and down around the confines of his skull; flickering and hefty, while the flustered face of the Sun lord arrested his gaze.
They all sounded like fun, but two struck the synapses of his brain like lightning. One of them a response to the man’s brief inquiry, and the other out of nervous enthusiasm.
“Oh, I can shoot, alright. But nothing close to what you already demonstrated the other day. You have an accuracy my hands have yet to master.” Emery surmised carefully, indisposed to admit he could be precise with a bow if need be. Especially if it involved spinning the yarn about his rise to handling the weapon; practicing on the unwary animals of the jungle to feed an insatiable lust for necromantic tendencies. Steeped in falsities, and bordering on a lie, there were still half-truths lingering behind the humble curtains. “I’m fortunate enough to get by, of course, if you had anything in mind involving the bow.”
The young man paused for a moment; asserting the ramble of his thoughts into a cohesive path. He desired to prod the subject of one other recreational past time, and cleared the narrow airway of his throat. Shifting the androgynous voice back onto the man of his clear-minded attentions.
“Though if you are uncertain, I would not mind the river. It would be nice to cool off a little under this midday sun. Wouldn’t you agree?” A narrow hand carded through pale locks of silver, slicking back a few rogue strands away from his forehead as if to show a physical point.
No matter the other’s response, however, Emery was quite suited for any of the options.
“In fact, I wouldn’t be unwilling to do either. But you, Quinn, promised fun, and so I believe it is your decision.” The angel’s white head bowed forward, accompanied by slender fingers tenting together; interlocked to uphold the smooth point of a chin. A breath of air, short and airy, hummed out from between loosely grinning lips. “Both, or none, I want to hear your opinion. What is it that dear Quinn would be interested in?”
His eyes refused to break the viridian stare of the man he was supposed to hate.
Kill on sight.
Emery was fortunate to have been born in a more slack period of time - planning out recreational events with a worshiper of the Sun instead of engaging in a fight to the bitter death, and though the dark realization did not show upon his calm expression, it raged within the recesses of his skull. In another world, another time, one of them could already have been dead. Quinn with a slit throat; fast and unforeseeable. Emery, an arrow sticking far into the depths of his rib cage; drowning in blood. They would not have become acquaintances.
No. He had to make the peace count.
The mortician only hoped the smile across his own lips had not waned in the trance of destructive thoughts.
To be judged on his accuracy from the other day, the man had humbly shared his own skill, but Quinn assumed otherwise if they were able to make such judgements.
“Maybe a few shooting games or target practice, nothing too crazy. But I’m sure that you have good accuracy to share!
“The river if perfectly fine too~ Noontime is passing anyways, so it’ll probably be great to have a cold splash of water during the hottest time of the day...”
Words drifted off at the glittering sight of disturbed bangs, strands of moonlight flickering and revealing more pristine skin underneath. Dunking his head into chilling water sounded more than perfect to cool off his steaming thoughts. Infatuation was consuming him, making the Sun’s healer lose his mind, but Quinn couldn’t resist the innocent bliss in his heart.
Given authority over their choices, the blond lifted an index and middle finger for their options and pressed the two digits together in gestation.
“How about we put the two together? Let’s head down to the river and when we’ve had enough of the water, fishing up a snack or two doesn’t sound bad.”
Content with his conclusion, Quinn lifted himself off the ground and ignored the claws the tugging at his pant legs. Hands brushed stray foliage from his gear and readjusted the bow and quiver onto his back, before one reached to pick up his remedial stall and the other stretched out in an offering to the moon angel.
